Artist Statement | Tara Shoemaker
I paint landscapes that explore the possibility that the natural world can reveal something true.
Working in watercolor, mixed media, and touches of iridescence, I create atmospheric paintings shaped by observation, memory, and imagination. While my work often begins with real places, my goal is not to document a landscape but to capture moments when light, weather, and atmosphere seem charged with meaning.
I am drawn to landscapes that evoke wonder, longing, and hope. Through layered color, luminous surfaces, and expressive mark-making, I seek to create paintings that feel discovered rather than designed—places where beauty and mystery coexist, and where the ordinary hints at something beyond itself.
The world is broken, yet glory still shines around all the edges. My work is an attempt to honor those moments of revelation and invite others into them.
