What Shapes My Work


I’m Tara Shoemaker, a contemporary landscape artist based in Rhode Island. I work primarily in watercolor and mixed media, using color, abstraction, and layered marks to move familiar places beyond literal description. My Christian faith shapes the way I see the natural world: broken and beautiful, ordinary and still full of glory.

Where I'm From


I grew up in Nebraska, where long summers, distant horizons, wildflowers, wind, and approaching storms shaped the way I see the natural world. I drew, painted, and wrote poetry throughout childhood, though I never imagined art would become such a central part of my life. That openness—the sky, weather, and sense of distance—still influences the landscapes I’m drawn to today.

The Beginning


In my mid-thirties, I began painting seriously. I bought a watercolor kit, took it to a local state park, and started painting what I saw. Watercolor quickly became a way of paying closer attention—to shifts in light, color, weather, and the shapes of the landscape. What began simply grew into a determined practice of painting, study, and experimentation.

Finding My Direction


As I kept painting, I became less interested in reproducing exactly what I saw and more interested in deciding what mattered in a scene. I began pushing color, simplifying shapes, letting edges disappear, and combining watercolor with other materials. That shift—from recording a landscape to interpreting it—became the direction my work still follows.

The Work I Do Now

I work primarily in watercolor and mixed media, using expressive color, abstraction, layered marks, and touches of iridescence to move the landscape away from literal description. I’m interested in what happens when familiar forms begin to dissolve, edges disappear, and light becomes almost tangible.

My goal is not to document a landscape, but to capture those moments when light, weather, and atmosphere seem charged with meaning—the sense that there is more here than meets the eye.

Where do you ship to?

We’re pleased to ship our standard prints worldwide, working with a trusted fulfillment partner for efficient and careful delivery. Originals and hand-finished prints are shipped domestically within the U.S. only, to ensure high-quality handling. For international shipments, additional taxes, import duties, or regulations may apply, and these are the buyer's responsibility.

Can I return a product if I change my mind?

Because of their unique and custom nature, all sales of original artworks and hand-finished prints are final. Standard prints are produced and shipped by our partner, The Print Space, and may only be eligible for return under specific conditions, such as damage or defects.
